Dreaming about new sewing projects as a distraction

I see my endocrinologist again tomorrow, and I'm kinda nervous/anxious about it, so I've been trying to distract myself with other things. I'm not expecting anything bad, but my history with doctor appointments is soooo craptastic...

Anyhow.

I've been pondering making a split skirt for a Steampunk outfit. I really don't wanna do the ;Steampunk equals wearing stockings and garters out where everyone can see them'. This IS Texas, and my skin color is more suited to living closer to the artic circle than the equator, so I want a split skirt. I've been looking at the TV and Folkwear patterns, but I don't have experience with either line, so I have no clue which is better/easier/etc. But I'm not sure how strictly I'll follow the assembly instructions. Hell - the only reason for thinking I need a pattern is because I've never seen a pattern layout. I may not even need one. But I don't have the online costuming community and its resources anymore, so...I'm looking at patterns. I'm not very enthused about browns, so I'm thinking grey instead. But hey - I can still change my mind.

This weekend was very nice. I got a chance to be more social, and that was a change I needed desperately. I still need solitude, but now I'm getting way too much of it.

A split skirt actually sounds like it will look much better than showing off your garter belt :)

Do not dare for one moment think that steampunk = brown. Fuck that whole "everything in the victorian era was sepia because tintypes" ignorance. Chemical dyes came into their own during that era (and often killed the dyers, the tailors, and the ladies who wore them because arsenic is a lovely color).

Extant museum collection garments show shrill pinks, swollen purples, vibrant blues, leaf green, anything you want. Anyone tells you it's not steampunk, tell them to go hotglue another gear on their goodwill polyester vest and then swan away in your glorious skirt.

I was thinking more about what a 'proper' Victorian lady would wear while going Adventuring. :) Something that wouldn't wrinkle too much or show dirt easily - and the chemical dyes did make black so much easier to achieve and maintain...:)

Black was a volatile dye back then too, although better than in the middle ages. "Proper" would be muslin, canvas, denim, for adventuring.

I was thinking twill - something that doesn't wrinkle too much or show dirt too easily. Steampunk down here is more 'Wild West meets Steam' (read 'saloom girls') than NeoVictorian. But I wamt tp gp a different way...

Do whatever you want. Said it before, will always say it: "You can't do steampunk wrong, but you can do it badly". Do steam how you want and don't worry about anyone else ;)
